We have been reading, reflecting, and discussing the matter of prayer. Prayer is the heart - the center - of the Christian life.
We've read a number of author's and their own perspectives on the matter - some practical, others more philosophical. As we now begin the classic work known as The Practice of the Presence of God, Brother Lawrence helps us see that "praying without ceasing" (St. Paul) is possible, and just how it is possible - and it may be far simpler than we might imagine.
Brother Lawrence was a Carmelite brother (monk). Our frend, John of the Cross, was also a Carmelite. Recall that the order of Carmelites take their inspiration from Elijah, "the one who stands [always] in the presence of God." Hence, the spiritual gift (or "charism") of the Carmelites is unceasing prayer.
For this first assignment, read and annotate only the forward of the book. Answer the following questions on your blog.
Due: Friday, April 22.

For this first assignment, read and annotate only the forward of the book. Answer the following questions on your blog.
- In the forward, Tessa Bielecki is going to introduce Lawrence's life and context. As you read, intentionally note at least three specific aspects of Lawrence's life/character/habits that most intrigue or attract you and that you hope you will learn more about as you read the primary text itself. Why do they attract you?
- Like #1 above, record at least three specific aspects that are most distasteful or unattractive to you - and why they are unattractive.
- Summarize the section, "The Teresian Spirit" on pp. XXI and following. Be sure to detail this with examples from the text.
